Introduction

A new generation of video game consoles will be premiering shortly. The video gaming world is calling it “The Console Wars”. Although the battle of video game system superiority has been going on for a while now, this year promises to be on a larger scale than the previous wars. Sony, the maker of PlayStation, and Microsoft, the maker of Xbox, are expected to release their next-generation systems in November. This report will be a comparative analysis of the soon-to-be-released Xbox One and PS4.

In social gameplay, players will now be able to view and share in-game play with friends by streaming their game footage (“PlayStation 4”). Gaikai, a cloud based gaming service, PlayStation App, and PlayStation Vita, are some of the services and devices PlayStation plans to facilitate in order to make this interaction happen (“PlayStation 4”).

The PS4 is black with an angular design, and appears to be made from the same plastic as its predecessor (Rivington). According to Rivington, the PS4 looks slimmer than the Xbox One. The price of the PS4 will be $399 in the United States, £349 in the United Kingdom, and €399 in Europe (Rivington).

There will not be a restriction on PS4 pre-owned games (Rivington). Consumers will be able to buy, trade, sale, or lend their games freely (Rivington).

Xbox One

The Xbox One is the third console developed by Microsoft (“Xbox One”). On May 21, 2013, Microsoft announced that the Xbox One would be the successor of the Xbox 360 console (“Xbox One”). November 22, 2013, is the scheduled release date for the Xbox One in North America, some parts of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand (“Xbox One”). Japan and the remaining European markets will get the Xbox One in 2014 (“Xbox One”).

The launch smoke has cleared and gamers have officially entered the era of next-generation gaming. In one corner, you have the $499 Xbox One, a gaming console that wants to be the center of your living room experience. Complete with live TV integration, as well as a revamped Kinect 2, controller and interface, the One is a force to be reckoned with.

In the other corner is the PS4. Positioning itself as the gamer’s console, the $399 PS4 offers an innovative controller, a heavy emphasis on social and Remote Play capabilities allowing gamers to play anywhere in the house.
